New Delhi: More than 1 in 5 enterprises in the country's vast unorganised sector have used the internet to take orders or carry out transactions. According to the latest data from the Annual Survey of Unorganised Sector Enterprises released by the National Statistical Office on Friday, the use of the internet for entrepreneurial purposes by unorganised enterprises increased during the period October 2022 to September 2023.
The data shows that at the national level, the share of organisations using the internet for business purposes increased to 21.1 per cent from October 2022 to September 2023, from 13.9 per cent from April 2021 to March 2022.
This reflects the improvement in the use of information technology and digital platforms. It also shows that the use of internet by unorganized enterprises in rural areas has increased from 7.7 percent to 13.5 percent. At the same time, the use of internet by unorganized enterprises in urban areas increased from 21.6 percent to 30.2 percent during this period.
Digitization in small businesses has accelerated significantly after the Covid pandemic. He said, small organizations in the largely unorganized and informal sector are rapidly adopting digital technologies and expanding their businesses. Now digital payments have become widespread.
The unorganized sector is important in the Indian economy as it has a large number of establishments and employs a large number of unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled people. It also plays an important role in the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
