Vegetable prices in June Crisil report: In the month of June, the price of a vegetable thali has increased by an average of 10 percent. The main reason for this was the increase in the prices of onion, tomato and potato. In the month of June, due to severe heat and crop damage due to climate change, the prices of vegetables and fruits started skyrocketing. In such a situation, the report has revealed that the retail inflation rate will increase in the month of June.
According to the monthly report 'Roti Chawal Rate' by Crisil Market Intelligence and Analysis, the price of vegetarian thali increased by 10 percent to Rs. 29.4 per thali in June, which was priced at Rs. 26.7 in June 2023. It was Rs. 27.8 in May 2024. Vegetarian thali consists of roti, vegetables (onion, tomato and potato), rice, dal, curd and salad.
The report has found a huge rise in the prices of vegetables like tomatoes, onions, garlic, potatoes, chillies which are essential in a vegetarian thali. The total increase in the price of a vegetarian thali has been attributed to a 30 per cent increase in the prices of tomatoes, 59 per cent in potatoes and 46 per cent in onion prices.
Unseasonal rain spoiled the game
In case of onion, a big drop in rabi crop area led to low revenues, while unseasonal rains in March reduced potato yields, according to the report. Tomato yields have fallen by 35 per cent compared to last year due to high temperatures in the main producing areas of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, leading to a transition to the summer crop.
Besides, reduced acreage has led to a 13 per cent rise in rice prices, resulting in lower incomes, the report said. Drought in the key Kharif month has led to a 22 per cent rise in the price of pulses.
