Surat: Raghubhai Chauhan's 15-year-old daughter Aastha, who lives in the city's Parvat village area, has been successfully treated for a serious illness called Guillain-Barre syndrome and doctors at SMIMER hospital have revived Aastha. Suffering from a disease called Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS), which affects one to two children in a lakh, Aastha was treated for 63 consecutive days at the Surat Municipal Corporation-run SMIMER hospital. The daughter was kept on a ventilator for 30 days. Seeing their daughter recover, the parents had no words to thank the doctors at SMIMER.
Dr. Devang Gandhi, Associate Professor, Department of Pediatrics, informed that Aastha Chauhan was admitted to SMIMER Hospital on April 15. Initially, she had difficulty in walking as well as breathing and paralysis. She was immediately admitted to the Pediatric ICU and kept on ventilator for a month. After conducting necessary tests, Aastha was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome, and doctors initially treated her for 30 days by inserting a tube in her throat so that she could breathe easily on the ventilator.
Aastha recovered and was discharged on June 18. Now regular checkups are done. As a result of the joint efforts of Dr. Poonam Singh, Head of Pediatrics Department, Dr. Ankur Chaudhary, Dr. Falguni Chaudhary, Dr. Mittal and resident doctors, nursing staff, ENT doctors and physiotherapy doctors, the daughter was successfully treated.
Dr. Devang further said that IVIG costs 15 to 20 thousand for the treatment of Guillain-Barre syndrome. A total of 3.50 lakh injections were given free of cost. If the same treatment was done in a private hospital, the entire cost of treatment would have been 10 to 12 lakh rupees. Treatment was done free of cost in the Municipal Corporation-run SMIMER Hospital.
What is Guillain-Barre syndrome?
Dr. Devag said that GBS disease is an autoimmune disorder caused by a virus. In which the muscles of the whole body become weak. This can happen in cases where there is no cleanliness or there is continuous diarrhea and vomiting. In this disease, the patient has difficulty in walking, difficulty in breathing. Apart from this, the body's immune system attacks healthy nerves, which can also result in paralysis. If not treated on time, the patient's life may be in danger.
