Poverty in India reduced to 8.5 percent during 2022-24

According to a research paper published by economic think tank NCAER, despite the challenges posed by the corona pandemic, poverty in the country is expected to decline to 8.5 percent during the year 2022-24 as against the poverty rate of 21.2 percent between 2011-12.

The survey titled Rethinking Social Safety Nets in a Changing Society, authored by Sonalde Desai of NCAER, used data from Wave 3 of the recently concluded Indian Human Development Survey (IHDS) as well as Wave-1 and Wave-2. According to the IHDS findings, poverty decreased significantly between 2004-5 and 2011-12 (from an overall headcount of 38.6 per cent to 21.2 per cent) and was declining between 2011-12 and 2022-2024 despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Poverty in the country declined from 21.2 per cent to 8.5 per cent.

Traditional strategies less effective

As accidents of birth become less important than accidents of life, traditional strategies to alleviate chronic poverty among large sections of society may prove less effective. As India moves towards equitable development, ensuring a social protection system that keeps pace with social change will be a major challenge. In an era of economic growth, when opportunities expand, the determinants of chronic poverty, such as natural disasters, accidents of life involving illness and death, may become less important, and occupational opportunities may become more important.

CEO of Niti Aayog had called 5% as poverty

This year, Niti Aayog chief executive BVR Subramanian had said that the Consumer Expenditure Survey shows that poverty in the country has come down to 5 per cent. If we take the poverty line and compare it with the Consumer Price Index (CPI), we can see that the average consumption of the smallest group, 0-5 per cent, is almost the same.
