Mallikarjun Kharge on Agniveer: Congress has raised the issue of Agneepath scheme before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Congress has announced that if it comes to power, it will stop the Agneepath scheme and will bring back the old recruitment process in the army. Therefore, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has today written a letter to President Draupadi Murmu regarding this scheme. In this letter he requested the President to do justice to the approximately two lakh youth who were selected for regular service in the army but were not recruited. He claimed that the government stopped their recruitment and came up with the Agneepath scheme due to which these youth are facing difficulties.
Kharge wrote in the letter that, recently I met these youth. He told me, between 2019 and 2022, around 2 lakh candidates were informed that they have been selected in the three armed services – Army, Navy and Air Force. These youth struggled against all odds to pass the rigorous mental and physical tests and written examination.
'Dreams of youth broken'
He said, 'By May 31, 2022, he was confident that he had achieved his dream and was only waiting for his appointment letter. Their dreams were shattered the day the Government of India abolished this recruitment process and decided to implement the Agneepath Scheme in its place.'
The Congress leader said, 'There are many issues related to the Agneepath scheme. Former Army Chief MM Naravane wrote that Agnipati has surprised the army. Kharge said that apart from this, this scheme creates a parallel cadre of soldiers to create discrimination among our soldiers. After four years of service, most firefighters will leave and look for a job. Some argue that it could affect social stability.
He said, 'Not only did it take years for the candidates to fulfill this dream, but each of the 50 lakh applicants had to deposit Rs 250. Which is a huge amount of Rs 125 crore taken from these youth.
'Many youth committed suicide'
The Congress President has claimed that many youth have even committed suicide due to depression and despair. Kharge wrote in the letter that our youth should not be allowed to suffer like this. I appeal to you to ensure that these youth get justice.
