Kotkapura firing case: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has reprimanded the state government in the case related to suspended Punjab Police IG Paramraj Singh Umranangal. Even after the High Court's order, the government did not make him join again. Along with this, now the government has taken 15 days from the High Court to follow the said orders. The High Court has given approval to the government in this regard and made it clear that if this order is not followed even now, then the court will be forced to issue strict orders.
IG Paramraj Singh Umranangal, suspended in the Kotkapura firing case, had challenged his suspension order in the High Court. Five months ago in February 2024, the High Court had given a verdict in favor of Umranangal. Along with this, orders were also given to the government to recruit him.
However, earlier the petition filed by him in CAT was rejected. He argued in the petition that in the present case the order extending the period of his suspension was issued after a period of 632 days from the first order of suspension.
In 2019, IG Paramraj Singh Umranangal was arrested by the SIT formed in the Behbal Kalan and Kotkapura police firing case. After this, Umranangal has been suspended. The Punjab Home Department took the above action after the official notification of the arrest of the said police officer and subsequent sending him to jail by the court.
In October 2023, a case was also registered against Paramraj Singh Umranangal and two other police personnel in the fake encounter of 29-year-old Sukhpal Singh, a resident of village Kala Afghana in Gurdaspur district. In this case, a case has been registered under sections 166A, 167, 193, 195, 196, 200, 201, 203, 211, 218, 221, 420, 120B IPC at Police Station Bhagwantpura, District Ropar. The SIT is also investigating the case. The case is pending in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
