Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday sought bail from the Delhi High Court in a corruption case registered by the CBI in connection with the alleged excise policy scam. The Aam Aadmi Party national convener was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) from Tihar Jail on June 26. Kejriwal is still in judicial custody in the money laundering case registered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
He challenged his arrest in the CBI case. This petition is still pending in the High Court. Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on March 21. And the concerned court granted him bail in the money laundering case on June 20. However, the High Court stayed the lower court's order.
The Delhi Lieutenant Governor ordered a CBI probe into alleged irregularities and corruption in the formulation and implementation of the excise policy, following which the policy was scrapped. According to the CBI and ED, irregularities were committed while amending the excise policy and undue benefits were given to license holders.
Kejriwal was formally arrested by the central agency during his appearance in the Rouse Avenue Court on 26th of last month. He was then sent to three-day CBI custody for questioning. Last week, the CBI was allowed to produce Chief Minister Kejriwal in a special court after questioning by the central agency in Tihar Jail.
