Although the Indian stock market is currently in a boom, the value of mergers and acquisitions in the country in the first six months of 2024 fell 9 per cent to $38 billion compared to the same period last year, from $42 billion in the previous year.
According to data available with a news agency, the 2024 figure for M&A deals in the first six months of any calendar year is the lowest since 2017. Data Infrastructure Trust's $2.5-billion acquisition of telecom tower company ATC Tower is the biggest M&A deal of 2024 so far. The value of deals may have fallen to a seven-year low this year, but in terms of the number of deals, the first half of this year has seen the highest number of deals in the last eight years, barring 2022. The figure was 1,916 in 2022, followed by 1,460 deals this year. The number of deals in 2024 increased by 17.3 per cent compared to 1,245 deals in 2023.
