Zomato was asked to pay more than 9 crore rupees in tax, the company said it will appeal against it

Every year the Income Tax Department issues notices to many big companies to pay taxes. A similar notice has been sent to a food delivery company as well. Let us tell you that this notice has been sent by GST.

Food delivery company Zomato Ltd has received a goods and services tax (GST) demand notice of Rs 9.45 crore from the Assistant Commissioner of Business Tax (Audit), Karnataka.

The company disclosed this in the information given to BSE. Let us tell you that this is not the first such case. Many such notices have been issued to the company earlier also. GST of Rs 5,01,95,462 (5.01 crore) has been demanded by the tax regulator of Karnataka. An interest of Rs 3.93 crore and a penalty of Rs 50.19 lakh will be imposed on this.

In total, this will be Rs 9.45 crore. According to the filing, the company received the tax order as part of the audit of GST returns and accounts for the financial year 2019-20. On June 28, Zomato shares closed at ₹ 200.35, up 0.10 per cent from the previous close of ₹ 200.15. The company said in response to the tax notice, “We believe we have a strong case on the merits and the company will file an appeal against the order before the appropriate authority.”

This is not the first time that a food delivery company has received a tax notice. Zomato received a tax notice from the Additional Commissioner (Central GST), Gurugram in 2021. According to media reports at the time, the notice demanded the company to pay Rs 11.82 crore including interest and penalty charges. The company had the same response when it appealed against the tax order.
