Mumbai: 16 tigers have died in Maharashtra during the five months from January to May. Last year, a total of 51 tigers died in the state due to various reasons. This has come to light in a written reply given by Forest Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar to a question in the Assembly.
This question was raised by some MLAs on the issue that many tigers have died after touching the electric wires installed around the fields to protect the agricultural property in the state.
From 2018 to May 2024, 22 tigers have died due to electrocution in the state. In 2023, 51 tigers died in the state. It has been found that 26 tigers died naturally, 10 due to accident, two due to poisoning, 9 due to electrocution and four were killed by poachers.
In the current year, 16 tigers have died between January and May 2024. It is reported that eight tigers have died naturally, two due to accidents, one died due to electrocution, while the deaths of five tigers are under investigation.
