The National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted simultaneous raids at several places in Tamil Nadu on Sunday morning. This raid was conducted in the Hizb ut Tahrir case. As part of the operation, the NIA also raided two places in Erode district.
Proceedings of the Hizb ut Tahrir case
Sources associated with the NIA say that a total of 10 locations were raided in Tamil Nadu and the operation is still going on. It is worth noting that in 2021, the NIA arrested an accused in the Hizb ut Tahrir case from Madurai. The NIA registered a case under various sections of the IPC as well as the Unlawful Activities Act. The accused, identified as Mohammad Iqbal, had shared objectionable posts on social media targeting a particular section of the society, threatening to disrupt public order.
The incident happened in May
The incident follows the arrest of six members of the international Islamist group HuT in May for anti-national activities such as campaigning against elections and democracy. Those arrested included a man in his fifties, his two sons and three others aged between 26 and 33. Provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) have been invoked against them.
