Mumbai: A special TADA court has approved the plea of 1993 bomb blast accused Abu Salem seeking compensation for the time he spent in jail as a raw prisoner during the trial.
Petitioner Salem, who is currently lodged in Taloja jail, has alleged that despite the special court's order, the jail authorities have not compensated him for the time he spent in custody during the bomb blast case. This facility has been provided for raw material prisoners in the 2006 TADA case.
It is unfair that the time spent as a raw prisoner is counted in one case and not in the other. Taloja requested the Central Jail to be directed to adjust the period of detention from November 11, 2005 to September 7, 2017 against the sentence.
TADA court special judge BD Shelke accepted the plea and directed the jail superintendent to compensate him for the time spent as a raw prisoner. Before the blast, Salem was given an informant in the 2015 murder case of builder Pradeep Jain. In this case, his imprisonment as a raw prisoner was adjusted against the sentence. But this was not done in the blast case.
If the applicant is found guilty, the sentence cannot exceed 25 years in prison, according to the Portuguese Convention.
In 1993, there were 12 blasts in which 257 people lost their lives, 713 were injured and property worth Rs. 27 crore was destroyed.
