The historic Shahi Jama Masjid of the capital Delhi has got a new Shahi Imam. On the occasion of Shab-e-Baraat on Sunday, the outgoing Shahi Imam of the mosque Syed Ahmed Bukhari announced the new Imam. He declared his son Syed Usama Shaban Bukhari as his successor. After this Shaban will become the royal Imam in place of his father.
Shaban declared Bukhari as the 14th Shahi Imam
The arrest of Shaban Bukhari was organized on the auspicious occasion of Shab-e-Baraat. Shahi Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari declared Shaban Bukhari as the 14th Shahi Imam by wearing a turban. During this, he told about the history of Jama Masjid that the first Shahi Imam was appointed by Emperor Shahjahan.
This tradition is 400 years old
Ahmed Bukhari said that the first Imam of Jama Masjid (Hazrat Syed Abdul Ghafoor Shah Bukhari, Shahi Imam) was appointed Shahi Imam at the age of 63. According to traditions, the Imam declares his successor during his lifetime. Therefore, according to more than 400 years old tradition, I declare from this Jama Masjid that Syed Shaban Bukhari is my successor. He made this announcement in front of a gathering of Islamic scholars and other dignitaries. After this announcement, 'Dastarbandhi' was tied on the head according to an old 'custom' related to adornment.
Shaban became deputy imam in 2014
Syed Shaban Bukhari was appointed as the Deputy Imam of the mosque in a Dastarwandi ceremony in November 2014. In the event of the death or illness of Syed Ahmed Bukhari, he will serve as the 14th Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, it was announced by his father. The ceremony lasted for more than an hour at the Mughal-era mosque built by Emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century.

Syed Ahmed Bukhari, the 13th Imam of Jama Masjid, is the son of the 12th Shahi Imam Syed Abdullah Bukhari, who died in 2009 at the age of 87. In October 2000 he succeeded his father as the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid.
