Panchkula, June 29 (HS). Sprinter Gurindervir Singh on Friday emerged as the fastest sprinter on the Indian track by finishing the 100 meter race in 10.32 seconds on the second day of the 63rd Inter-State Athletics Championship.
Gurindervir said after the race, “In the last two years, many people had said that I am out of the race, I will not be able to run under 10.50 seconds, I have nothing left in me. This celebration was not for the other runners but for those who were doubting me.”
Others in the fray included two of the fastest runners in the country currently – Animesh Kujur and Amlan Borgohain – and the pair finished in the top three in the event.
Gurindervir said, “I have been training alone in Jalandhar for some time now. I have coach Sarabjit Singh Happy, but no training partner. Such competition is good as it motivates you to do better, but it is even more important to have such competitors in training. That is what really helps to improve and that is what I need right now.”
Though it was not his best performance, not even close to his own meet record set in 2021 (10.27 seconds, which is also his personal best), the 23-year-old was not disappointed. He feels it is just a matter of time for him to get back to form.
In the 400m, Mohammad Anas Yahiya and Mohammad Ajmal both clocked 45.93 seconds, with Anas leading with 45.926 seconds while Ajmal was second with 45.939 seconds.
Haryana's Mohit Kumar continued his impressive performance, clocking a personal best of 46.15 seconds to finish third ahead of other national relay team members Amoj Jacob, Mijo Kurien and Noah Nirmal Tom.
In the women's category, Sneha SS won the 100m race while Kiran Pahal produced another brilliant race and won by a comfortable margin, equalling Thursday's timing of 50.92 seconds.
In men's long jump, Jaswin Aldrin's poor performance continued as he could only manage 7.32 meters in his final attempt and finished 8th in the qualifying round. Krishna Sharma of Madhya Pradesh topped the list with 7.60 meters.
In the absence of Tajinderpal Singh Toor, Uttarakhand's Aniket was the best shot-putter in the qualifying round with a throw of 17.56m.
