Jabalpur, June 28 (HS). Earthworm is one of the important organisms of the soil. Earthworm has the ability to maintain the fertility of the soil. Therefore, it plays an important role in increasing the fertility of the soil. It is also known as the friend of the farmer, the ploughman of the field, the intestine of the earth, the engineer of the ecosystem and biological indicator.
Giving this information on Friday, Deputy Director of Agriculture Ravi Amravanshi said that earthworms are true friends and helpers of farmers. According to Amravanshi, earthworms of many species are found in India. Out of these, only two are easily available. One is Pheretima and the other is Eutyphius. Pheretima Postheumatica is found all over India. The worm castings of Pheretima are like small piles of separate pellets of soil and the castings of Eutyphius are like raised lines of soil. Their way of eating soil is beneficial. They make the land fertile for the farmers by ploughing it in a way. The top soil of worm castings dries up, then becomes fine and spreads on the surface of the land. In this way, the soil where the earthworms live becomes soft, due to which water and air can easily enter the soil. In this way, earthworms work like a plough.
The Deputy Director of Agriculture told that there are more than 10 thousand earthworms in one acre. These earthworms collect 14 to 18 tons or 400 to 500 maunds of soil from under the soil in a year and collect it on the surface. This raises the soil surface by 1/5 inch. This soil comes through the digestive organs of the earthworms, hence nitrogenous substances are also mixed in it and it acts as manure. In this way, they keep making the soil fertile for humans.
Amravanshi said that if they are completely removed from the soil, we will be in trouble. It is important that these tiny organisms in the soil are preserved at any cost to ensure that they continue to provide their invaluable services to mankind.
