Providence, June 28 (HS). Indian captain Rohit Sharma does not think that veteran batsman Virat Kohli's form is a “problem”, rather he believes that his intention is right and he can play in the T20 World Cup final against South Africa.
After a stellar performance with Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Kohli is trying to score runs with his bat throughout the edition of the big event. In seven matches, the veteran batsman has scored only 75 runs at an average of 10.71.
It seemed like the semi-final against England was the perfect platform for him to make a comeback and regain his form ahead of the final. He also smashed the ball for a six over mid-wicket, indicating a long stay at the crease. But when Kohli tried to hit a shot on the leg stump to Reece Topley, he was bowled.
Despite Kohli's disappointing season, the Indian captain is not worried about Kohli's form and backed Kohli to play in the final.
Rohit said in the post-match presentation, “Kohli is a great player. Any player can go through this. We understand his class and understand his importance in all these big matches. Form is never an issue. When you play cricket for 15 years, form is never an issue. He is playing well, he is probably saving the game for the final.”
India forgot the memories of the 2022 World Cup semi-final and entered the final by defeating England by 68 runs. The spin duo of Akshar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav performed brilliantly and bowled out the English team for 103 runs in 16.4 overs while chasing the target of 172 runs. Both Akshar and Kuldeep took 3-3 wickets.
Rohit believes the key to winning the final would be to play good cricket against the undefeated Proteas.
Rohit said, “We have been very calm as a team. We understand this occasion (final). Staying calm helps you make good decisions. This will help us win the match. You have to play good cricket. This is what we want to do in the final. We will try our best, that's all I can say. The team is in good shape, they are playing well. I can only hope that they give another good performance in the final.”
India and South Africa will clash in the final at Kensington Oval in Barbados on Saturday.
