World No. 1 para badminton player turned IAS Suhas Yathiraj created history, know more about him

Suhas L Yathiraj: Suhas L Yathiraj on Tuesday surpassed French legend Lucas Mazur to become the world number one in the BWF Para Badminton World Rankings. The Uttar Pradesh cadre IAS officer had won the World Championship title in February this year by defeating Indonesia's Freddy Setiawan.

40-year-old Arjun Award winner Suhas had to settle for a silver medal after losing to Lucas Mazur in the SL-4 category title match at the Tokyo Paralympics. Suhas now has 60 thousand 527 points, which is more than Lucas Mazur (58 thousand 953).

Expressing his happiness on Instagram, Suhas wrote, 'Finally world number one, I am happy to say that I have achieved the number one ranking in men's singles in the Badminton World Federation Para Badminton Rankings for the first time in my life. After a long time I replaced the world number one player Lucas Manzoor of France. Thank you very much for your blessings and best wishes.'

Who is Suhas Yathiraj?

This IAS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre was born in Shigoma, Karnataka. He is handicapped (leg problem) since birth. Suhas was interested in sports since childhood. In which he also got the support of his father and family.

Suhas's father treated him like a normal child and did not consider him disabled. His love for cricket is a gift from his father. So no matter what sport Suhas played, his family always supported him. Even his father always expected him to win. His father's job was transferable, so Suhas's education took place from one city to another.

Therefore, his early education took place in the village itself. Then he did engineering in computer science from National Institute of Technology Surathkar.

But the death of his father in the year 2005 was a big shock for Suhas. His father had a prominent place in his life. So after his death, Suhas started preparing for UPSC and joined the civil services.

After passing the exam, he got posting in Agra and he became the District Magistrate of Jaunpur, Sonbhadra, Azamgarh, Hathras, Maharajganj, Prayagraj and Gautam Buddha Nagar but his journey continued even after becoming a senior officer.

How did you start playing badminton?

Earlier Suhas used to play badminton as a hobby and to relieve his office fatigue. Gradually he progressed in his hobby and won medals in competitions. Then he started playing badminton professionally.

Then in 2016, he started playing international matches. But Suhas lost his first match in the badminton tournament played in China but now he is the world number-1 player. He has become the 1st para badminton player.
