Polytetrafluoroethylene is commonly known as Teflon. They are made using PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid), which is toxic to health. By cooking in Teflon every day, this toxic chemical gets accumulated in the body over time, leading to diseases.

PFCs (perfluorinated chemicals) used in non-stick can prove fatal for pregnancy. This can lead to low birth weight of babies. It can also cause problems like immune dysfunction or preeclampsia.

How to protect yourself

Replace damaged non-stick pans immediately. The presence of damage or cracks means that the dangerous PFOA layer has broken down, leading to contamination of food during cooking. This releases toxins, which contaminate food and invite many diseases.

Even if you are using non-stick, choose the right temperature for safe cooking. Non-stick cookware is not meant for high temperature cooking. So cook food at low temperature to avoid this danger.

Choose the right utensil. Use a non-metallic or wooden spatula.

Avoid using aluminium utensils. Use steel, glass or iron utensils.
