The central government has prepared a draft to curb the unwanted calls and messages coming from time to time in the name of promotion.
According to the draft prepared by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, if someone has not consented to receive calls related to business promotion or sale of any item but receives such a call, it will be considered as unsolicited commercial communication and the company or person making the call will be held liable for it. The new guidelines proposed by the ministry are aimed at curbing unsolicited calls from unregistered telemarketers or 10-digit private numbers.
The government's proposed draft states that any call or service message related to goods and services will be considered business communication. Personal communication is excluded from this scope. These guidelines have been prepared by telecom companies and telecom regulators. The ministry has sought suggestions from the public on the draft guidelines by July 21.
Who will the rules apply to?
This guideline will apply to every person or entity that makes such calls or involves others in making such calls or benefits from such calls. The government's draft categorizes such calls and messages as unsolicited, using unregistered numbers or SMS headers, calling without the consent of the individual or communicating without digital consent.
