Lok Sabha Speaker Election 2024: The first parliamentary session of the 18th Lok Sabha has started today (25 June). The biggest issue in this session is the election of the Lok Sabha Speaker. The post of Lok Sabha Speaker is considered very important. The Speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha was BJP MP Om Birla, however, his term ended as soon as the elections were held. In such a situation, first a pro tem speaker is selected who will handle the work of the Lok Sabha till the election of the Speaker. The most senior member of the House is elected as the pro tem speaker.
The opposition said that Kodikunnil Suresh, MP from Mavelikkara, Kerala, should be appointed as the Protem Speaker. However, President Draupadi Murmu has appointed BJP MP Bhartruhari Mahtab as the Protem Speaker. It has happened many times that the Protem Speaker is also made the Speaker candidate.
The opposition is ready to compromise on just one condition
According to sources, the opposition is ready to compromise on the post of Lok Sabha Speaker on only one condition. That is, the Deputy Speaker should be from the opposition. If the BJP agrees to this, then the opposition can also support the NDA candidate for the post of Speaker. Till now it has rarely happened that a Speaker has been elected without the consent of the opposition.
The opposition gave three names to the government for the post of Protem Speaker. However, the opposition withdrew those names as well. The opposition says that when Kodikunnil Suresh is the most senior, why is he not being made the Protem Speaker. The opposition wants Suresh to be elected Deputy Speaker. But if the NDA does not agree to this, the opposition can field him as the Speaker candidate. According to reports, the leaders of India are going to hold a meeting soon.
What did Congress leader Jairam Ramesh say?
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said, 'Kodikunnil Suresh has been an MP eight times. However, seven-time MP Bhartruhari Mahtab has been made the Protem. If it is believed that Suresh did not win consecutive elections, then why was BJP MP Ramesh Jigajinagi not made the Protem Speaker. He has also won the election for the seventh time in a row.' It is worth noting that during 2014-19, the Modi government gave the post of Deputy Speaker to AIADMK. Also, no one was made Deputy Speaker between 2019 and 2024.
