Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has demanded a CBI probe into the Tamil Nadu poisonous liquor case. She said on Sunday that Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi should give a statement on this incident.
Sitharaman said that more than 200 people are still undergoing treatment in the hospital in critical condition. A total of 56 people have died. Most of the dead are from the Scheduled Caste. She said that she condemns this incident. It is worth noting that the number of people who died due to drinking illegal liquor in Kallakurichi district has reached 53. Nirmala Sitharaman said, 'It is surprising that the Congress did not speak a single letter against this incident. This is a state where licensed liquor is sold in government shops. However, chemical-based unauthorized liquor was served in Kallakurichi city. Where are Congress President Mallikarjun and Rahul Gandhi? They contest elections from the South because they are confident that they will win. In Tamil Nadu, DMK is contesting elections together, but when Dalits are dying from poisonous liquor, their statement is not even coming.'
BJP's performance in the state
In protest against the lathi incident, BJP staged demonstrations against the ruling DMK party in various areas of Tamil Nadu. A large number of workers including BJP leader H. Raja participated in the protest. The state government was criticized for its failure to prevent smuggling or illicit liquor. Hundreds of BJP workers were also detained in other districts.
