Defending champions Argentina began their campaign at the Copa America Football 2024 with a win over Canada 2-0, with Lionel Messi scoring both goals.
Messi passed the ball to Julian Alvarez in the 49th minute who scored the first goal. Messi then assisted Lautaro Martinez's goal in the 88th minute. Argentina is looking to win their third consecutive major title after the 2021 Copa America and the 2022 World Cup. This was Messi's 35th match in which he surpassed Chile's Sergio Livingstone, who played 34 matches in the Copa America tournament from 1941 to 1953. Argentina will face Chile in New Jersey on Tuesday. They will then play Peru in Miami Gardens on June 29. Canada will play Peru in Kansas City on Tuesday and Chile in Orlando on June 29.
