23 rupees given for killing 1 rat

Mumbai: In Mumbai, about 75 lakh rats have been killed as part of a long-running campaign by the municipality to prevent the spread of diseases including leptospirosis during the monsoon. The rat killing work is done by 17 organisations and Rs 23 is paid per rat. In this way, the BMC has spent lakhs of rupees on the rat eradication campaign.

Lepto disease is mainly spread by rodents. That is why the municipality launched a rat control campaign and destroyed 6,71,648 rats between January 2023 and May 2024. The citizens of Mumbai have also been appealed to get rid of rats immediately if they are in the house. When water accumulates in the rainy season, the feces of rats, dogs and cats get mixed in it. There is a possibility of getting lepto disease if the feet get injured by walking in that water. Therefore, if you have to pass through a waterlogged area, the health department has advised to go home and wash your feet with a disinfectant.

According to sources in the mosquito control department, the lifespan of a rat or a large rodent is usually 18 months. Rats give birth to babies 21-22 days after conception. Usually it gives birth to five to 14 cubs at a time. These chicks become fertile within five weeks and give birth to new chicks.

In this way, a pair of rats produces an average of 15 thousand new rats in a year. These rats spread various diseases, so a campaign is launched to eliminate them.
