“Now I request your office to at least consider extending the date of implementation,” Mamata said. “There are two reasons for this – moral and practical.” She said these important legislative changes must be debated afresh and placed before the newly elected Parliament for scrutiny. “There has been widespread public opposition to the hastily passed new laws. Keeping this in mind, a fresh parliamentary review will demonstrate commitment to democratic principles. This mechanism will provide the newly elected representatives an opportunity to thoroughly scrutinise the proposed laws,” the TMC supremo said.
Groundwork needed before legal changes
The TMC supremo said, “The proper implementation of any far-reaching legislative change requires careful ground work beforehand and we have no reason to shy away from such an exercise.” She further added, “I request you to consider our appeal to suspend the implementation of the Indian Civil Code (BNA) 2023, the Indian Evidence Act (BSA) 2023 and the Indian Civil Protection Code (BNSS) 2023,” she said. Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said the three new criminal laws will come into force from July 1.
