Maharaj Movie Controversy: It was in 1861 when an article was published in Maharashtra's reputed newspaper Satyarth Prakash. The title of the article was Gujarati but it meant The true religion of Hindus and the current heretical viewpoint was written by social reformer and journalist Karsandas Mulji. In which he questioned the Vallabh sect which believed in Pushti Marg.
In the article, Karsandas alleged that the then saint of Vallabh sect, Jadunathji Vrijtaranji Maharaj had relations with his female devotees. Making another serious allegation, he said that in this sect it is said that any male devotee who agrees for his wife to sleep with Maharaj will be shown his faith. Netflix is being boycotted on social media over the release of the film on the OTT platform.
It is believed that this film is inspired by the famous Maharaj Libel Case of 1862. The case was fought in the then Bombay Supreme Court. In this case, journalists Karsandas Mulji and Nanabhai Rustamji Rani, who made serious allegations against the Vallabh sect, were made accused. In the case filed on behalf of the Prishti Marg sect, it was said that this allegation is extremely serious and insulting. Actually, the spiritual leaders of the Prishti Marg sect were called Maharaj. This spiritual leader expanded his sect in Bombay in the 19th century. By 1860, there were five Maharajs in the entire city of Mumbai.
Satya Prakash was a Gujarati weekly newspaper founded by social reformer and journalist Karsandas Mulji. The newspaper was started in 1855, published from the then Mumbai. In 1861, his grandfather merged with Navroji's newspaper Rust Goftar.
In fact, Karsandas came from a business family that believed in the Prasasti Marg sect. He went against the family and exposed the filth spread in the Prasasti Marg sect. In 1855, the Maharajas were accused of sexual abuse for the first time. At that time, the most senior Maharaja of Bombay, Jeevanlal, rejected the axis of social reformers.
Maharaja Jadunathji Maharaj of Surat filed a defamation case in the Bombay Supreme Court on 14 May 1861 which was much talked about in 1862. This case sparked a lot of debate from Bombay to London. His trial began on 25 January 1862 and ended on 4 March 1862. On 22 April 1862, the verdict in this case came in favour of journalist Karsandas.
At that time, there was such a heated debate on this matter that thousands of people thronged the court to hear the arguments during the trial. Journalists and media groups from India and abroad also reached there. The judges said in their verdict that a journalist is a public teacher. The journalist did his duty and the religious leader misled the people. During this case, the help of many sociologists was also taken. Along with this, the doctors who treated the religious leader suffering from a sexually transmitted disease like syphilis were also made witnesses.

Recently, Bajrang Dal had filed an application in Mumbai's Dindoli Court to stop the release of the film.
