Stockholm : Many serious diseases like cancer still remain a challenge for the whole world. New research has found that people who develop cancer at a young age have an increased risk of developing other serious diseases like cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer later in life even after being free from the disease, so researchers suggest that cancer patients should not be released without a future follow-up plan.
The results of the research were published in The Lancet Regional Journal on Tuesday. • The study surveyed all people suffering from cancer under the age of 25 in Sweden since 1958. Researchers found that these cancer survivors had three times the risk of developing cancer in their lifetime compared to the general population. Apart from this, the risk of heart diseases increases by 1.23 times and the risk of accidents and suicide increases by 1.41 times. Leela Hubbert, a consultant at the Cardiology Clinic of Vrinvi Hospital in Norrkoping, Sweden and a researcher at Linkoping University, says that people who have had cancer in childhood or adolescence need to be cautious in the future because it increases the risk of serious diseases like heart disease and cancer in these people.
Laila Hubbard said that cancer fighters have to fear many new diseases throughout their lives. In particular, chemotherapy and radiation therapy increase the risk of CVD. Hubbard said, this means that releasing a cancer patient without a follow-up plan is fraught with danger. Early identification of future threats is essential.
