India distances itself from the declaration of Ukraine peace conference

New Delhi, June 16 (HS). India refused to sign the joint statement and related documents issued at the Ukraine Peace Conference held in Switzerland and maintained its old policy of finding a solution to the conflict through diplomacy and dialogue regarding Ukraine.

The joint statement issued after the conference emphasized the territorial integrity of Ukraine citing the UN Charter. This included the demand for Russia to withdraw its troops from all areas. Which was supported by about 80 countries. 12 countries of the Global South including India, Brazil, South Africa did not sign the joint statement.

Senior diplomat of the Ministry of External Affairs Pawan Kapoor, representing India at the conference, while expressing India's point of view, said that we believe that the solution to the problem is possible only through a solution acceptable to both the parties (Russia, Ukraine) of the Ukraine conflict.

It is noteworthy that Russia was not invited to this conference. Along with this, China had refused to attend this conference.

In a press release issued in the context of the peace conference, the Ministry of External Affairs said that India participated in this conference and other meetings so that a solution to the conflict could be found peacefully through dialogue and diplomacy. To achieve this goal, it is necessary that there should be honest discussions between both the parties involved (Russia, Ukraine).

The release further said that India will maintain contact with both parties to achieve lasting peace in Ukraine at the earliest.

It is worth noting that during the Ukraine conflict that has been going on for the last two years, India refused to criticize Russia, regardless of the pressure from Western countries. Also, India continued to import large quantities of crude oil from Russia. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power for the third time, the government continued its old policy.

The Ukraine peace conference was organized with the support of the US and European countries. About 100 countries participated in it. Just before the conference, Russian President Vladimir Putin had put forward a peace proposal on behalf of his country. In this, there was a demand to accept the ground reality and not to join the NATO military organization of Ukraine.
