The use of social media platform “X” (Twitter) has been banned in Pakistan for the seventh consecutive day. The ban, imposed since February 17, has not yet been lifted, making it difficult for people to share information or their views. The Pakistan government has not yet revealed the reason behind the ban. Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has also not yet issued any statement on this matter. Users are facing a lot of difficulty in sharing their opinions and information.
Internet shut down to prevent terrorist attacks
Due to the general elections held on 8 February, people of Pakistan are not able to use many social media platforms. A Pakistani government official said that internet services were shut down on election day to prevent any terrorist attacks. Due to which there were repeated disruptions in social media exchange that day.
Shutting down the internet is unconstitutional
Internet shutdowns constitutionally violate freedom of information sharing and speech. In 2018, the Islamabad High Court had said in its decision that shutting down the internet is against fundamental rights and the Constitution. Digital rights activists condemned Pakistani authorities for this ban on social media platforms.
Order issued to X Services
On Thursday (February 23), the Singh High Court ordered Pakistan Telecommunication Authority to start the services of Social Media X across the country. However, the PTA has not yet approved lifting the ban on X.
