6 killed, many missing, more than 2,000 tourists stranded due to landslide and rain in Sikkim

The period of heatwave and intense heat continues in the northern parts of the country. On the other hand, heavy rains are falling in the states of North East. Many areas of North Sikkim have suffered heavy damage due to continuous rain for the last three days. Hundreds of houses and many roads have been washed away in landslides and floods. So far 6 people have died.

The maximum damage has been done in Mangan district of Sikkim. The Sangklang bridge, which was built after the flood on October 4 last year, also collapsed on Thursday afternoon due to more than 220 mm of rain in a day. Due to this, connectivity to Dzongu, Chungthang, Lachen and Lachung has been cut off. There is neither phone connectivity nor roads in these areas now. Electricity poles have also been washed away.

Disaster management officials engaged in relief and rescue in Sikkim said that about 2 thousand tourists are stranded in tourist places Lachung and Chungthang. Now they can be rescued by helicopter, but flying of helicopter is not possible at present.

On the other hand, the Teesta river is in full spate in South Sikkim. Many houses have been washed away due to this. Last year, more than 100 people died in a sudden flood caused by the bursting of a glacial lake in North Sikkim.
