Kathua 13 June (HS). Deputy Commissioner Kathua Dr. Rakesh Minhas on Thursday called a meeting to review anti-flood measures in the district. The meeting was attended by XEN Flood Control, Inspector SDRF and representatives of stakeholder departments.
The preparedness cum rescue plan was discussed in the meeting in which the DC called for coordination among departments and other agencies to safeguard precious lives and property. Under the plan, a centralized control room will be set up in the DC office complex to monitor the situation and take timely coordinated action. The police department was asked to keep provision of wireless sets in six flood prone areas Panjtirathi-Billawar, Jakhol, Flood Control Gauge Reader Hut near National Highway Rajbagh Bridge, Mukundpur, Kotpunnu and Kirian Gandyal to ensure timely communication of instructions and advisories.
The DC stressed on making a list of vulnerable flood prone areas, location of related infrastructure such as dozers, sandbags, boats, divers, swimmers, vehicles, dewatering pumps besides telephone numbers of concerned department and agencies in-charge. He also called for close coordination among the departments to ensure timely rescue and rehabilitation whenever required. He directed to do proper mapping of flood prone areas and make a record so that the location can be easily traced by rescue teams during emergencies. The DC also called upon the Flood Control Department to create a social media group for regular updating of water level of major drains and tributaries besides prompt dissemination of information of surplus discharge of Ravi river by UBDC officials. Municipalities were directed to ensure desilting of all drains in the city well in advance to avoid any blockage of water during rains.
