Delhi stuck in water crisis, Supreme Court folded hands, Himachal government also returned with promises

Delhi water crisis: The Delhi government, which approached the Supreme Court demanding more water from neighbouring states, has received a major setback. The Supreme Court has refused to issue an order in this matter and has left the decision on the Upper Yamuna River Board (UYRB). The court said that the issue of water sharing between states is complex. Meanwhile, Himachal Pradesh also retracted its earlier statement of sending surplus water and said that we do not have surplus water.

What did the Supreme Court say?

A bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Prasanna B Varale said that the sharing of Yamuna water between the states is a complex subject and the court does not have technical expertise in this matter. This issue should be left to the UYRB. The Supreme Court asked the UYRB to call a meeting of all the parties on Friday and take a quick decision on the issue. The court directed the Delhi government to present the petition before the board by 5 pm for consideration on humanitarian grounds.

Himachal also showed its hand!

The Himachal government, which had promised to give 136 cusecs of additional water to Delhi, has also backtracked. On Thursday, Himachal Pradesh retracted its earlier statement in the Supreme Court and said that we do not have additional 136 cusecs of water. It is worth noting that the Supreme Court was hearing a petition filed by the Delhi government, which demanded that Haryana be asked to allow the additional water released from Himachal to reach Delhi unhindered. People are facing severe water crisis in Delhi amid the scorching heat. The Delhi government alleges that Haryana is releasing less water into the Yamuna, which has reduced the capacity of water treatment plants.
