Mumbai: Former Lok Sabha Speaker and former Chief Minister Manohar Joshi, known as the gentle face of Shiv Sena, known for its aggressive street fighting, died today at the age of 86 in a private hospital in Mumbai. He was away from active politics for almost two decades. His last rites were performed with full state honors this evening. Apart from Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, former Chief Minister Sharad Pawar, Sushil Kumar Shinde, Uddhav Thackeray and a large number of Shiv Sainiks and other fans were present for his last darshan.
Manohar Joshi's health was unwell for a long time. A few months ago he was admitted to the hospital due to brain hemorrhage. His health worsened yesterday evening. He was immediately taken to the hospital. However, he passed away this morning due to cardiac arrest.
Manohar Joshi, one of Balasaheb Thackeray's associates when he founded Shiv Sena, had held several positions, including that of Mayor of Mumbai. In 1995, when a joint government of BJP and Shiv Sena was formed in the state for the first time, Balasaheb Thackeray had challenged him to take over the post of Chief Minister on behalf of Shiv Sena. In a way, he became the first Chief Minister of a state who never had any connection with the Congress. However, after some allegations, when Balasaheb Thackeray asked him to resign from the post of Chief Minister overnight, he left the post without even a moment's delay.
Manohar Joshi, elected to the Lok Sabha, was elected as the Speaker during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led government at the Center from 2002 to 2004. Manohar Joshi's political career began to change after the Vajpayee government lost the Lok Sabha elections in 2004. He was defeated in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections and after that he was forced to join Shiv Sena party.
Paying tribute to him, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Manohar Joshi worked day and night for the upliftment of Maharashtra. Former Chief Minister Sharad Pawar recalled how Manohar Joshi, as Speaker, had played an important role in installing the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the Parliament complex. Many political leaders including CM Eknath Shinde, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar also paid tribute to him.

Manohar Joshi was a founding associate of Bal Thackeray's Shiv Sena and remained loyal to the Bal Thackeray family despite many ups and downs in his political career and the changing political equations in Maharashtra.
Manohar Joshi was the first Chief Minister of the Shiv Sena-led government. However, in 1999, Narayan Rane made indecent allegations against Joshi. At that time, Bal Thackeray had ordered Manohar Joshi to resign from the post of Chief Minister on just one phone call. Without uttering a single letter, the very next moment he contacted the then Governor of the state, P.C. Alexander sent his resignation.
In 2012, when Shiv Sena's first Dussehra rally took place after the death of Bala Saheb, some Shiv Sainiks pushed Manohar Joshi. But, Manohar Joshi swallowed the insult. Yet his devotion towards the Thackeray family did not diminish.

Born on 2 December 1937 in the coastal Konkan region of Maharashtra, Joshi obtained his bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the prestigious Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI), Mumbai.
– His political career started by joining Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Later he became a member of Shiv Sena. Joshi emerged as a prominent leader in Shiv Sena in the 1980s. He was known for his organizational skills.
– Manohar Joshi was married to Andha Joshi, who died in 2020 at the age of 75. He is survived by a son and two daughters.
Joshi started his career as a teacher and entered politics in 1967. He was associated with Shiv Sena for more than four decades.
– During the year 1968-70, he was a municipal servant of Mumbai Municipal Corporation and in the year 1970 became the Chairman of the Standing Committee of Mumbai Municipal Corporation. He was the Mayor of Mumbai during the year 1976-1977. Then he was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council in the year 1982. After serving three terms in the Legislative Council, Joshi was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in 1990 and was the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly during 1990–91.
-In the 1999 Lok Sabha elections, Joshi won as a Shiv Sena candidate from the Mumbai North-Central Lok Sabha constituency. He was also the Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises in the Union Cabinet. Thought it best to stay.
Mayor in Council, Jhunka Bhakhar Scheme, Jupdan Rehabilitation Scheme etc. were started during Joshi's tenure as CM. His successor CM Narayan Rane stopped most of his schemes as soon as he assumed power. Still, Joshi did not utter a voice of displeasure.
