Pipla got the blessing of Shani Dev
According to legend, once Sage Agastya went south with his disciples to the banks of the Gomti River and performed yagna for a year. At that time, the heaven was ruled by demons. A demon named Kaitabha took the form of Pipalag and started harassing the Brahmins during the yagna. As soon as a Brahmin went to pluck twigs or leaves from the Pipalag tree, the demon would eat him up.
Seeing their numbers dwindling, the sages went to Shanidev for help. After this, Shanidev took the form of a Brahmin and went to Pipla. The demon turned into a tree and ate Shanidev thinking him to be an ordinary Brahmin. After this, Shanidev came out by tearing his stomach and destroyed that demon. The sages were pleased with the end of the demon and thanked Shanidev. Shanidev was also pleased and said that whoever touches or worships the Peepal tree on Saturday. All his wishes will be fulfilled. Whoever worships, meditates, performs havan and worships the Pipla tree properly. He will never have to bear my pain.
