Ranchi, June 10 (HS). Kalpana Soren, wife of former Chief Minister Hemant Soren, took the oath of office and secrecy as a member of the Legislative Assembly on Monday. Kalpana Soren has been elected MLA from Gandey Assembly constituency. Speaker of Jharkhand Legislative Assembly Ravindra Nath Mahato administered the oath to Kalpana Soren in the Speaker's chamber in the presence of Chief Minister Champai Soren.
Kalpana Soren has become MLA for the first time by winning the Gandey by-election. In the by-election held on the Gandey assembly seat along with the Lok Sabha elections, Kalpana Soren contested on the JMM ticket as the joint candidate of the Indy alliance. She defeated BJP candidate Dilip Verma.
It is noteworthy that JMM MLA Sarfaraz was an MLA from Gandey. When the ED was questioning Hemant Soren, there was a fear that Hemant could be arrested. In such a situation, so that there is no turmoil within the state and the party and Kalpana can take over the reins of the Chief Minister's post, the Gandey assembly seat was vacated. Because, Gandey is considered a safe seat for JMM.
