New Delhi: The prices of onion, which had provided relief from inflation so far this year, are now ready to make consumers cry. The prices of onion have been increasing in the markets for the last few days. According to experts, the arrival of onions in the markets has led to an increase of more than 20 percent in the price of onion in a week. Farmers troubled by the low prices last month are bringing less onions to the markets. The removal of the ban on onion export with conditions has also promoted price improvement.
Onion prices have risen to Rs 500 in wholesale markets. On June 1, the wholesale price of onion in Pimpalgaon Nashik in Maharashtra, a major producer state, was Rs 100. 400 to Rs. 2,400 today, which has risen to Rs. 800 to Rs. 2,900 per quintal. Due to the increase in onion prices in the mandis, the price of onion has also increased in the retail market.
According to the data of the Central Consumer Affairs Department, the average retail price of onion across the country was Rs 31.84 per kg on June 1, which has increased to Rs 32.93 per kg today. During this period, the average retail price of onion in Delhi increased from Rs 30 to Rs 35 and in Maharashtra from Rs 28.42 to Rs 31.26 per kg.
Due to low prices in the last few months, farmers are bringing less onions to the market. If the income remains low, the price will cross Rs. 3,000. Less quality goods are coming to the markets. Due to which the price of good quality onions has increased.
The positive environment created by the lifting of the ban on onion exports may also lead to a rise in onion prices. However, large-scale exports are not possible due to the conditions imposed.
