Price of Veg and Non Veg Thali: The average price of a veg thali has increased by nine percent in May. A report released on Thursday attributed this to the increase in the prices of onions, tomatoes and potatoes. The monthly 'Roti Chawal Rate' report of Crisil Market Intelligence and Analysis said that the vegetarian thali is expensive. However, the fall in the price of broiler chicken has reduced the price of non-vegetarian feed.
According to the report, the price of vegetarian food in May increased from Rs 25.5 in the same period a year ago to Rs 27.8 per plate. Whereas a month ago in April, the price of a vegetarian thali was Rs 27.4. This thali mainly consists of roti, vegetables (onion, tomato and potato), rice, dal, curd and salad.
The report attributes the overall rise in the price of vegetarian thali to a 39 per cent rise in tomato prices, a 41 per cent rise in potato prices and a 43 per cent rise in onion prices. According to a Crisil report, lower income from onion due to a sharp reduction in rabi crop acreage and lower income from potato due to crop failure in West Bengal have boosted the prices of this vegetable.
Apart from this, the prices of rice and pulses have also increased by 13 per cent and 21 per cent respectively. However, the price of vegetarian thali did not see much increase as the prices of cumin, chilli and vegetable oil fell by 37 per cent, 25 per cent and eight per cent respectively.
In contrast, the price of a non-vegetarian thali has fallen to Rs 55.9 per plate from Rs 59.9 per plate in the same period a year ago. This is lower than the price of Rs 56.3 per plate in April 2024. All other ingredients in a non-vegetarian thali remain the same, but dal is replaced by chicken meat. The report said that a 16 per cent year-on-year decline in broiler chicken prices is the main reason for the fall in non-veg thali prices. Broiler chicken accounts for 50 per cent of the total cost of a non-vegetarian thali.
