The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on Monday decided to increase the toll tax by an average of 5 per cent for all motorists using express vans in the country from June 3. Thus, all the drivers on the highway will have to pay the prescribed 5 per cent more toll tax. Toll tax is increased every year for all motorists using highways. However, in view of the Lok Sabha elections this year, the implementation of an average increase of 5 per cent from April 1 has been postponed. Now after the elections, this increase of 5 per cent in toll tax will come into effect from June 3. Toll tax is increased every year. Toll tax is increased on the basis of wholesale based inflation. There are a total of 855 user fee toll plazas on the national highway network of the country where toll fee is charged as per the National Highway Fee Rules 2008 under user fee. Out of 855, 675 toll plazas are publicly funded fee plazas while 180 toll booths are operated by concessionaires.
