The Prime Minister arrived in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, 97 km from Thiruvananthapuram, by helicopter. His helicopter landed 300 metres away, right in front of Vivekananda Mandapam. As soon as Prime Minister Modi reached Kanyakumari, the convoy headed straight to the Bhagavathi Amman Temple, where he offered prayers before proceeding to the Vivekananda Rock Memorial. The Bhagavathi Amman Temple finds mention in ancient texts. It is believed that the idol of Goddess Kanyakumari was installed by Lord Parashurama 3000 years ago. Priests said that this is the first time that a Prime Minister has visited the Devi. Wearing a dhoti and a white shawl, Modi offered prayers at the temple and circumambulated the sanctum sanctorum. The priests performed a special aarti and he was given temple prasad which included a shawl and a framed photo of the temple deity. The Prime Minister may also visit the memorial to see the statue of Tamil poet Tiruvalluvar before his departure on June 1.
