Sensex fell 220 points to 75170

Mumbai: With heavy pre-monsoon rains in Kerala against IMD's better than normal monsoon forecast, red alerts are in place in some areas and the Opposition making a push ahead of the last phase of Lok Sabha elections, NDA's dream of winning more than 400 seats may not be fulfilled today. Sensex, Nifty based and small, midcap stocks witnessed a reduction in overbought conditions. Funds today trimmed capital goods stocks and oil-gas stocks trading bullish in the last few days, while selling metal-mining, IT-software services, technology stocks as well as realty, power, banking stocks. Sensex closed 220.05 points lower at 75,170.45 as funds sold power-capital goods stocks as well as other frontline stocks including Reliance, Maruti Tata Motors, Bharti Airtel after the index-based index witnessed minor two-way volatility in the early hours. While Nifty spot closed 44.30 points down at 22888.15.

The capital goods index fell by 665 points

In capital goods stocks today, the BSE Capital Goods index closed 665.23 points lower at 69637.96 as funds booked big profits in frontline stocks. LG Equipments fell Rs 37.65 to Rs 614, Lakshmi Machine Works fell Rs 743.30 to Rs 15,715.65, CG Power fell Rs 21.15 to Rs 629.50, Suzlon NG fell Rs 1.30 to Rs 43.96, Praj Industries fell Rs 13.75 to Rs 502.25, BHEL fell Rs 7.55 to Rs 291.20. While Teamcan rose by Rs 110 to Rs 4062.80, Honeywell Automation rose by Rs 1308.30 to Rs 52,194.50, Grindwell Norton rose by Rs 59.40 to Rs 2388.65, Thermax rose by Rs 45.55 to Rs .5340.60, Larsen & Toubro rose by Rs 7.65 to Rs 3658.45.

Oil index fell by 353 points

There was profit booking in oil and gas stocks today. Linde India fell Rs 10.90 to Rs 546.65, Adani Total Gas fell Rs 20.20 to Rs 951.70, HPCL fell Rs 10.90 to Rs 546.65, BPCL fell Rs 9.65 to Rs 646.50, ONGC fell Rs 3.25 to Rs 274.35, Reliance Industries fell Rs 21.20 to Rs 2911.25. BSE Oil and Gas index fell 352.86 points to 29001.15.

Realty stocks surge

Many stocks gapped down today as realty companies' funds also cut the big rally trading cautiously. Sobha Developers fell Rs 86.90 to Rs 1908.90, Phoenix Mills fell Rs 133.85 to Rs 3056.25, Prestige Estates fell Rs 62.30 to Rs 1547.25, Brigade Enterprises fell Rs 46.50 to Rs 1230.05, DLF fell Rs 23.30 to Rs 818.80, Mahindra Life fell Rs 15.10 to Rs 572.75, Swan NG fell Rs 16.55 to Rs 621.60. BSE Realty index closed 180.05 points down at 7921.02.

Net purchase of shares by FPIs/FIIs worth Rs 65 crore

Foreign Portfolio Investors – FPIs, FIIs made net purchases of shares worth Rs 65.57 crore in cash today on Tuesday. There were sales of Rs 14,673.86 crore against total purchases of Rs 14,739.43 crore. While DIIs-Domestic Institutional Investors made net purchases of shares worth Rs 3231.67 crore in cash today. There were sales of Rs 9937.99 crore against total purchases of Rs 13,169.66 crore.

Investors' wealth decreased by Rs 3.03 lakh crore

Due to weakness in Sensex, Nifty along with selling in many small and midcap stocks, the total wealth of investors i.e. the total market capitalization of BSE listed companies today declined by Rs 3.03 lakh crore in a single day to Rs 416.92 lakh crore.
