The water problem in the world is gradually becoming serious. During the last 75 years, the groundwater level has fallen dangerously by an estimated 55 percent. This will further increase the crisis of clean drinking water: Researchers concluded during their study that it will have the greatest impact on the population living in the Global South. The study conducted by researchers at Utrecht University in the Netherlands has been published in Nature Climate Change. It states that the lack of clean water is a sign of major danger for both humans and ecosystems. It should not be ignored. The study highlights that along with drastically reducing our water demand, we also need to pay equal attention to eliminating water pollution to deal with the world's water crisis. The Global South countries mainly include Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia (except Israel, Japan, South Korea) and Oceania (except Australia-New Zealand).
Difficulties will increase in the future
Researchers predict that water shortages will increase worldwide. The study notes that both the changes and the impacts will not occur equally in all regions of the world. For example, in Eastern Europe and North America, water shortages occur during many months of the year: in contrast, water shortages in developing countries are generally much greater and continue to increase throughout the year.
water quality will be affected
Researchers claim that water quality will be affected in the future. This could be due to rapidly increasing population and economic growth, climate change, and generally deteriorating water quality. According to the study, water quality, though essential for safe water use, receives little attention. Earlier calculations focused mainly on water quantity aspects; but, safe use of water depends entirely on quality.
