Mumbai, May 25 (HS). The 77th “Cannes Film Festival” was very special for India. Shyam Benegal's “Manthan” got a special screening at this film festival nearly 48 years after its release. Many actors, influential people and entrepreneurs of Indian cinema attended this year's festival. Indian films and artists were nominated in many categories in the festival. Now an Indian actress has won an award at “Cannes”.
The name of this actress is Anasuya Sengupta. She hails from Kolkata, West Bengal. She won the Best Actress award in the Un Certain Regard Prize segment for her performance in “The Shameless”. In the film directed and written by Bulgarian filmmaker Konstantin Bozhanov, Anasuya played the role of Renuka, who escapes from a brothel in Delhi after stabbing a policeman. Omra Shetty played an important role in this film. Anasuya became the first Indian actress to win this award.
Anasuya has dedicated her award to the bravery of the gay community across the world. In her speech after accepting the award, she said, “You don't have to be gay to fight for equality for all. We just need to be very, very decent human beings.”
Anasuya Sengupta hails from Kolkata. She has worked as a production designer in Mumbai. She currently lives in Goa. She designed the set of the Netflix show “Masaba Masaba”. Anasuya has studied from Jadavpur University. In an interview, Anasuya had said, “When I came to know that our film has got a nomination at Cannes, I jumped out of my chair.”
