Millennium star Amitabh Bachchan contested the election from Allahabad Lok Sabha seat on the request of his childhood friend Rajiv Gandhi. That election was held in December 1984 after the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. That election of Allahabad is etched in the history and hearts of the residents of the city. No one has been able to break Amitabh's record of victory till date. Like Indira Gandhi, Amitabh was also born in Allahabad and hence Amitabh Bachchan was also born in Allahabad. Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna was in front of him. Amitabh Bachchan was contesting in that election and the election command had gone from the hands of Congress to the hands of the public. Once during the election campaign, Bachchan and Bahuguna came face to face. Amitabh bowed to Bahuguna and blessed him with a victorious face which proved to be true.

Lok Dal had put up some posters for campaigning against Amitabh, which read – What is there in my courtyard? Actually, this was a line from Amitabh Bachchan's film Lawaris which was used for Amitabh. Amitabh gave his reply in a public meeting held at Meja Road. He said, Bahugunaji is like a father to me. My parents have always taught me to respect elders. I was born in Allahabad. Wherever I go in the country and the world, people tell me, 'Look Amitabh…the boy is calling me to the banks of Ganga.'

Voting continued till late night

When Amitabh came out for election campaign, girls stood on the balconies of their houses and waved their dupattas in the air. On the day of voting, voting was till 5 pm but there was so much crowd at the polling booths that voting continued till late night. During the counting of votes, there were 10,000 ballot papers on which Amitabh's name was written with lipstick.

Amitabh won by over 1.87 lakh votes

Out of a total of 4,36,120 votes, Amitabh got 2,97,461 (68.21 per cent) votes while his opponent Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna got 1,09,666 (25 per cent) votes. Amitabh won by a huge margin of 1,87,795 votes. In that election, a total of 26 candidates were in the fray from Allahabad but except Amitabh and Bahuguna, no one could save their deposit.
