15-year-old weightlifter Preetisimata Bhoi from Dhenkanal, Odisha created history in Lima, the capital of Peru. She won gold with a world record in the World Youth Weightlifting Championship. Preetisimata lifted a total of 133 (57+76) kg in the 40 kg weight category. She created a world record of 75 kg by lifting 76 kg in clean and jerk. Jyoshna Saber of Odisha won the silver medal in the same weight category with a total weight of 125 kg.
After Mirabai Chanu, the first youth to set a world record, Preetisimta is the first weightlifter from the country to set a world record in the youth category. Chanu has set a world record in clean and jerk in the senior category. At the age of two, she lost her father. A mountain of troubles fell on her mother. As a father, he raised both the daughters with struggles and got them admitted in the Central School of Dhenkanal. At the same time, coach Gopal Krishna Das saw both the sisters running in the school meet and decided to make them weightlifters. Both have started giving results within four years.
Elder sister Vidusimata and younger sister Preetisimata were coming first and second in 100 and 400 meter races. He felt that both of them should be made lifters. Then he talked to his mother Jamuna Devi. She was not ready to let her daughters participate in weightlifting. After a lot of persuasion, she agreed. Vidusimata has also won medals in National Youth Welllifting and Khelo India.
India won four medals on the first day of the ongoing championship in Lima (Peru). Apart from Preetisimta and Jyoshana in the 40 weight category, Payal won the silver medal by lifting 147 (65+82) in the 45 weight category. Baburam Hembrom won the bronze medal with a total weight of 193 (86+107) kg in the boys' 49 weight category.
