New Delhi, May 23 (HS). Canada has dismissed its head coach Pubudu Dassanayake from his role. He was working on this post for the last two years.
A former Sri Lanka and Canada international, Dassanayake returns for a second stint as Canada coach in July 2022, having previously coached Nepal (twice) and the United States.
Since assuming the role again, Dassanayake has successfully led Canada to the Americas T20 Regional Finals and qualification for this upcoming T20 World Cup, with Canada regaining ODI status in the 2023 World Cup Qualifier playoffs under his coaching. Canada also gained promotion from the CWC Challenge League to the CWC League 2, where they currently top the table.
According to Cricbuzz, there have been rumours of unrest in the Canadian camp for some time, with some surprise selection decisions being made after the appointment of a new three-member selection panel excluding the head coach following the botched Cricket Canada board elections last month.
Dassanayake was verbally informed by newly-elected Cricket Canada vice-president Gurdeep Clare on Wednesday (May 22) morning that his services would not be required after the completion of the preliminary matches currently underway in St Kitts.
Dassanayake's replacement has not been named yet.
Canada will begin its T20 World Cup campaign against hosts USA on June 1 in Dallas.
