Jharkhand Congress minister Alamgir arrested in benami cash case

New Delhi: Congress minister in Jharkhand government, Alamgir Alam, has been arrested in the benami cash case. ED made the arrest on Tuesday after ten hours of interrogation. Cash worth Rs 37 crore was seized from the house of the servant of Alamgir Alam's secretary. ED had to bring in state-of-the-art machines to count the cash and it took two days.

Jharkhand Rural Development Minister Alamgir Alam was being interrogated from 10 am on Tuesday. After this the ED has confirmed his arrest. ED had summoned Alam on Sunday. He was asked to appear at the zonal office in Ranchi on May 14. He appeared before the ED on Tuesday. After this, ED called him again today.

On May 6, the apartment of Jahangir Alam, servant of Alamgir Alam's personal secretary Sanjeev Lal, was raided. Rs 37 crore in cash was recovered from him. Alam and Sanjilal were arrested after the raid.

In the last few days, ED raided many places in Ranchi. This cash was seized during one such raid. Machines were brought in to count cash. All were 500-500 notes. Apart from this, the agencies have also seized some jewelery from Jahangir Alam.

Alamgir Alam is a four-time Congress MLA from Pakur assembly constituency. Before this, he was also the Speaker of Jharkhand Assembly from 20 October 2006 to 12 December 2009. After winning the Sarpanch election, he entered politics. He became MLA for the first time in 2000.
