New Delhi, May 15 (Hindustan Reporter) Safdarjung Hospital celebrated World Haemophilia Day on Wednesday in collaboration with the Department of Hematology and Society for Haemophilia Care of India. It was attended by about 120 people including 70 hemophilia patients and their family members, Medical Superintendent and Additional Medical Superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital and doctors and staff of the Hematology Department.
The objective of the program was to make people aware about hemophilia. Safdarjung is the only central government hospital which has a hematology department. The Hematology department at SJH has been treating hemophilia patients for many years. World Haemophilia Day was celebrated for the first time in the hospital. The theme of this year's World Haemophilia Day was “Equal access for all”, meaning that every patient suffering from haemophilia has an equal right to be treated with factor therapy. Safdarjung Hospital provides the factor concentrate free of cost as “on-demand therapy” through central government funds. The hospital also provides services to CGHS and ESI beneficiaries, who are also on regular factor prophylaxis. Disability certificate for hemophilia patients is also issued in Safdarjung Hospital.
On this occasion, Dr. JM Khungar, HOD of Hematology, said that Safdarjung Hospital has trained laboratory facilities for diagnosis of hemophilia and hematologists for the treatment of this disease. The Hematology Department of Safdarjung Hospital intends to start a dedicated Hemophilia Day Care Center and Clinic which will provide comprehensive care to Hemophilia patients.
Dr Vandana Talwar, medical superintendent of the hospital, supported the hematology department's approach in “procuring factor as well as non-factor treatments”. Dr. Vandana Talwar also felt the need for a comprehensive daycare center for hemophilia patients. During the discussion, Dr. Sumita Choudhary, Consultant Hematology, highlighted the need to provide factorial support in the emergency department of Safdarjung Hospital. During the programme, Dr Ankur Jain, Assistant Professor of Clinical Hematology, raised awareness about “early identification and timely treatment with factor concentrates” for the treatment of haemophilia.
