Indian stock indices closed with gains for the third consecutive day today, led by auto, metal and energy shares ahead of US inflation data due on Wednesday. Today was the day of midcap and smallcap stocks. The BSE Midcap index closed 1.14 per cent up and the Smallcap index closed 1.8 per cent higher, while the benchmark Sensex closed 0.45 per cent higher.
After opening 80 points lower at the start of the session, Sensex made an intraday low of 72,683 in the early session and continued its uptrend thereafter. However, after 2 pm, the index declined slightly after touching an intraday high of 73,286 and the Sensex ended the day at 73,104, up 328 points or 0.45 per cent. In this way, a total fluctuation of 603 points was seen. On the other hand, after initially opening 8 points higher, Nifty made an intraday low of 22,081 after 10 am and has remained bullish since then. After making an intraday high of 22,270 at 2 pm, the index ended the day at 22,218, up 114 points or 0.51 per cent.
After opening 158 points higher, the BSE Mid Cap index made an intraday low of 41,206 and an intraday high of 41,672 and ended the day higher by 467 points or 1.14 per cent at 41,644, just 28 points below its intraday high. Similarly, after opening 243 points higher, the BSE Small Cap index also made an intraday high of 46,138 and low of 45,515 and ended the day higher by 808 points or 1.80 per cent at 46,102, just 36 points below the high of the day. During the period both the indices did not go below the previous close even once and as the day progressed, the bullish trend in both the indices continued.
Among Sensex stocks, M&M, L&T and JSW Steel were the top gainers with gains of 2.4 to 4 per cent. Apart from this, NTPC, IndusInd Bank, Sun Pharma and Reliance Industries also remained closed. On the other hand, TCS, Nestle India, Axis Bank and ICICI Bank are among the top losers.
Among sectoral indices, Nifty Auto closed 1.8 per cent higher led by significant gains in M&M, Hero Motor Corp and TVS Motor. Similarly, the metal index also gained 2.8 per cent, led by Adani Enterprises, SAIL and Vedanta. Nifty PSU Bank, Consumer Durables and Realty indices all registered a gain of 1 per cent. Whereas both Nifty FMCG and Pharma closed down by 0.5 percent.
