Speaking at the ceremony, Defense Secretary Giridhar Armane called on MDL to fully realize its true potential in warship building technology. At an event organized in Mumbai to commemorate the foundation day of MDL, the Defense Secretary described Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited as a precious gem of India, which has contributed to the country's economy and security by developing various capabilities for the Navy as well as for other commercial purposes. Armane stressed that India has a very important role in the Indo-Pacific region, hence continuous efforts are being made to strengthen India's shipbuilding capabilities. He highlighted the importance of achieving self-reliance in today's times. The Defense Secretary noted the key role the Navy plays across the region, including Indian operations in the Arabian Sea. He said that the present geopolitical scenario is such that India's Navy will continue to play an important role, for which shipbuilders will have to contribute significantly.
Mumbai Port Authority Land
The Defense Secretary performed puja on a portion of the adjacent land acquired from the Mumbai Port Authority. It will be developed for building and repairing various types of new ships as well as other types of construction and outfitting. The new infrastructure will give ample space to the shipyard for simultaneous execution of various projects.

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited has completed the platform design and hull construction of a miniature submarine named 'Arowana'. This shipyard has been building foreign designed submarines since 1984. At present it has also started the design and development of an indigenous conventional submarine. The miniature submarine is being developed as a proof of concept. The team working here is parallelly working on the development of the design of a full-scale conventional submarine by the year 2028.

The Defense Secretary also launched a solar electric hybrid boat with a top speed of 11 knots designed and co-developed with an indigenous technology partner. Its running cost is about 1/10th of that of a diesel boat and its maintenance costs are also very low.

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited has also launched a 24-passenger fuel cell electric ferry named 'SUCHI', co-developed with an indigenous technology partner. Its advanced technology has zero emissions and low acoustic characteristics, thereby cleaning waterways and contributing to environmental protection.

Giridhar Armane also inaugurated the technical seminar on 'Emerging Technologies and Future of Shipbuilding'. He also released a special coin of Rs 250, provided by the Reserve Bank of India, on the occasion, designed to honor the rich history and historical heritage of the shipyard.
