Pusire's RPF will trace lost mobile phones

Guwahati, 14 May (HS). It has now become easier for the Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Northeast Frontier Railway (NER) to trace stolen and lost mobile phones from trains and railway premises. Once a passenger reports his/her lost/stolen mobile phone in the Rail Madad app, the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal of the Department of Telecommunications (DOT) facilitates the Cyber Crime Branch of PUSIRE to trace the mobile phone. Is. At present, this portal will help in locating such lost devices in the telecom service network of Assam.

Sabyasachi Dey, Chief Public Relations Officer, PUCEER today informed that the Principal Chief Security Commissioner (PCSC)/PUCEER coordinated with the local police and law enforcement agencies of Guwahati and prepared an access plan for CEIR for PUCEER. The representative of PCSC office of Pusire also coordinated with the concerned officials of the Ministry of Communications in New Delhi. After detailed discussion and justification, access to CEIR portal was provided to RPF for the state of Assam as a pilot project. On April 19, a user ID and password was generated by the Department of Telecommunications in favor of CSC/Pool through the coordination and CEIR officer of CID-HQ/Assam.

On April 22, RPF initiated action by uploading details of lost/stolen mobiles in CEIR portal. 36 lost/stolen mobiles were blocked by RPF/PUSIRE through CEIR portal till 09 May. Till now 15 mobiles have been activated and traceability reports of lost/stolen mobiles have been received on CEIR. Out of 15 mobiles, 07 mobiles have been successfully recovered by RPF with the arrest of 03 criminals and 01 recipient. CEIR access has helped RPF to effectively detect cell-phone theft from trains and railway premises in Assam. RPF of Pursire is the first zonal railway of Indian Railways to get access to this CEIR facility. RPF also plans to utilize the CEIR facility in all the states under its jurisdiction.

Large scale incidents of cell-phone theft within trains and from railway premises have emerged as a serious concern, putting pressure on the resources of the RPF. Despite best efforts to catch criminals, the RPF's reach sometimes falls short of expectations and appears to lack systematic institutional support. To overcome this, access to CEIR portal will play a major role in combating this type of threat.
