The peel of a properly ripe fruit turns black within a few days, which always remains a headache for housewives. Some fruits can be eaten before the peel turns black. But if the fruit becomes too large and turns black, the only option is to throw it away. Because everyone shy away from eating fruits with black peel.
Reason for blackening of fruit
The peel of the fruit quickly turns black in summer. This is due to the high amount of ethylene found inside the fruit. Ethylene turns the fruit from yellow to brown. Black spots appear first. This is called enzymatic browning.
So what is the solution? Is there any way to keep fruits fresh for several days? This is being said in a video recently circulated on Tik Tok. Dustin Hadley conducted an experiment and posted a video of it on his account @that40yearguy. This is the method I am going to explain now. Dustin says that with just water the fruits can stay fresh for up to fifteen days.
a spell with water
In the video, Dustin puts three fruits in a bowl filled with water. Three fruits were also kept outside. The fruits were kept in the same condition for a week. The fruits kept in water were kept upside down. Dustin examined these fruits after 12 days.
Dustin says the fruit in the water was fresher than the fruit outside. They were not rotting or falling apart. But the fruit kept outside was completely rotten. By the time they were picked up, they were cut. Dustin shared his experience from this experiment that if fruits are kept in water, they will remain fresh for many days.
Some other measures to prevent fruits from turning black
Cut each fruit separately
The fruit is usually a pod. It may contain eight, ten or more fruits together. Fruits emit large amounts of ethylene gas. The presence of that gas can accelerate skin darkening. One way to control high levels of ethylene is to pluck each fruit from the pod and store it separately. This way, the skin of the fruit will remain intact for a few more days.
shock wrap
Another way to prevent the skin of the fruit from turning black quickly is to wrap the stem of the fruit with plastic or aluminum foil. This will help prevent ethylene gas from easily spreading to other fruits.
keep it in the fridge
Like other fruits, this fruit can also be kept in the refrigerator to keep it fresh. At lower temperatures, the skin darkening process will slow down. Keeping the fruit in the fridge will ripen it more but will remain fresh.
keep airtight
Ripe fruits can also be stored in an airtight container in the freezer. Freezing can prevent the fruit from ripening further.
Lemon juice
The fruit can be peeled and sliced or stored in an airtight container with lemon juice. The presence of citric acid in lemon prevents the fruit from ripening further.
Store in a cool, dry place
Fruits ripen more at higher temperatures. To avoid this, make sure to store it in a cool, moisture-free place.
